YOHIMBE ( \ yō-ˈhim-bā), Pausinystalia johimbe, is native to western and central Africa. It is part of the Rubiceae family. It is a flowering evergreen tree that is deep rooted in traditional medicine. The bark of the yohimbe tree is rich in the alkaloid yohimbine which is used as an aphrodisiac. The bark has also been smoked as a hallucinogen and used in traditional medicine to treat angina and hypertension. Yohimbine is now synthetically formulated in conventional medicine and used as a stimulant. Yohimbine acts on the sympathetic nervous system, "the fight or flight" response, which is marked by an increase in norepinphrine and adrenaline which may result in inadequate blood pressure control in people also using antihypertensive and diuretic agents. Please note that this extract should not be confused with the prescribed drug.
It is believed that yohimbine also works by blocking receptors in the body called alpha-2 adrenergic receptors that are responsible for inhibiting erectons and by increasing nitric oxide which cause vasodialtion of the blood vessels. This increases blood flow to the reproductive system. Studies have shown that the yohimbine may also enhance and prolong the affect of sildenafil.
In addition, it carries beneficial properties that may aid in weight loss through fat burning, xerostomia (dry mouth), narcolepsy, psychostimulant (mood and stress management), diabetes and male and female libido.
